would giving extra attention in that way help to curb the behaviour of a narcissistic(ish) person?
trying to find some solution to an employee who is constantly trying to show how good he is and always pointing out what he feels are shortcomings of other people or there "mistakes" (usually only mistakes because they weren't done as he would have done them) he seems to be threatened by anyone who shows good confidence in themselves and picks on them especially by suggesting to me that they are "problems" or incompetent when in fact they are our best guys. i cant stand it anymore but i don't have the ability to terminate him myself and want to avoid going to the boss to get him terminated if possible because i think he genuinely has a problem , it would be best if there were some way to curb the behaviour rather then him. any ideas? would extra praise help? hurt? should i give him a blunt reality check and let him know where he actually stands with everyone? suggestions please.

Well, i would say since this is a work environment, it would be time for a reality check. Someone needs to let him know where he stands, that may have to be you. You employees will be affected by this is it's not handled. Positive reinforcement will give him more firepower, and allow him to rub it into the others faces that he gets praised, you would be stroking his ego. Let him know where he stands in the workplace.

If you want to hurt the guy give him the reality check. Might not change him but may stop him for awhile. Extra praise would not help.

The problem with narcissists is that usually there is usually some method to their madness in that they are actually rather talented and insightful but are so messed up they end up being totally self destructive in all areas of their life.

Well, you could look for classes on narcisim and make him attend this ... however, behaviors rarly change unless the individual has a deep desire from within to change.
