Well there was a mixture of reasons:
The indigenous beliefs that the white man was their God comming back, the different techniques in fighting (i.e. the Spaniards would kill while the Aztecs, etc. believed in taking prisoners), the division between the different indigenous tribes, & of course diseases.

wen colobus dicoverd america he took over the carribean and parts of florida and made his way down to south america and the spainsh conquistidors saw that it was easy to controrl the natives and it made it easier to take south america
spain portugal france and the netherlands all took parts of south america
spain toomost but portugal took all of brazil
wen france and the netherlands took very small parts

Do you mean other nations making empires there or them trying to make empires elsewhere?
