Why should healthcare be a privilege is the question. We live in the "best county in the world" yet there are millions of people who cannot afford healthcare and this includes children. Is it not a right to have health insurance? the Bill of Rights is great, but when your child is sick and you cannot go to the hospital what do you have left, the right to scream and cry???

I live in the UK, but I spend a lot of time in the USA where my family owns property. People don't believe me when I tell them that the UK system is, to me at least, much more affordable, and that the quality of care is just as high, so I'm not surprised they don't believe you. My grandfather paid something crazy like £50 for stitches in his thumb a few years back, and so it's no wonder insurance is so expensive, especially for the elderly. In the USA the health service seems to exist for no reason but to make profit - no wonder so many people are priced out of the system. An NHS-style system, where the health service is funded through taxes, would work out cheaper than everyone paying the extortionate insurance they do now - that is a mathematical fact, but the USA has some issue with anything funded through taxes being borderline communist, so I can't see them changing their opinions any time soon. And the rubbish put forth by some about the NHS being terrible, people not getting proper treatment, etc. probably doesn't help. As to the individual above, asking about waiting times etc. I've never had to wait more than twenty minutes in Accident and Emergency - I know plenty who have waited much longer in the US. I went to my doctor on Monday, and next Monday I'm going into hospital for surgery. Not exactly a huge waiting list. I've never had anything but the most professional and best care, including brand new techniques and surgeries by world-class medical professionals, all of which would have cost me thousands in insurance, but much less in taxes.

Because America is so COMPLETELY scared of communism that it will have NOTHING to do with anything that even SLIGHTLY resembles it, even if that means putting its citizens in risk. To me (and basically every other modern country), communism can be a wonderful thing in proper dosages. For instance, healthcare and the education system, if communism is applied, would be free for any citizen. Have you ever seen the movie Sicko? According to that, Americans working in the healthcare industry get bonuses for rejecting people from plans, while many other countries give their healthcare people bonuses for actually making people better. Everyone has the right to live (and I recall from history class last year that it was an AMERICAN priest, I think maybe John Light or someone, who said that everyone had the natural right to life for just being born. BOY! Has that changed!), but America just wants to make a quick buck, regardless of how many people it betrays and slaughters. Face it. This country sucks =/

I DEFINATELY agree that Europe is by far more mature than America, and I dont see why (seeing as how Britain is basically Americas mother) Europe doesnt just END this countrys misery by putting it to sleep! Ka JEEBUS! America rarely makes things better

I wish healthcare was a basic right in the U.S., but it isn't. I pay for my health insurance through my employer. My premiums just increased last week. I consider this a privilege because I know many people who do not have or can't afford health insurance.

Because Europeans/UK pay a percentage of their earnings for healthcare, the more you earn the more you pay.Even if you go private you still have to pay into the health care system.

Why would Americans see it as a privilege, its not like its for free,i thought you payed insurance.
