I am an American looking to possibly move overseas to the UK or France. I am not sure where to start and what I would need. Any websites would be helpful. Also personal experience. I understand its going to be expensive, but I just want to get my foot in the door.
Whats your career? Are you happy?

If you're a US citizen, you can't just show up in Europe and stay for longer than 3 months. It is illegal to work here without the proper work visa or student visa.

In general in Europe, and in particular here in Italy, you have to have a job lined up in order to get a work visa before you move here from the US. You can only stay for 90 days without some type of visa (work, student, ...). You cannot apply for the visa while you're here and you'll need the proper paperwork from the company. Coming from the US, you'll also have to have skills that can't easily be duplicated here. That will mean a degree in a marketable field.

There are several on-line ex-pat sites that are good resources for researching moving to Europe; here are some to start with:

http://www.francethisway.com/wp/
http://www.howtogermany.com/pages/expat....
http://www.expatsinitaly.com/
http://www.expatsinitaly.com/before/gett...
http://www.insight-italy.com/artscsii.ht...
http://www.xpat.nl/index1.html
http://www.expats.cz/

You can find similar sites for other countries including the UK.

Your best bet is to get a job with a multinational company in the US and transfer to a poistion in Europe. You mightalso look at opportunities at military bases in the various countries.

Please be aware that you will have to file taxes both here and in the US if you retain your US citizenship.

Another resource to check for specific requirements is the website for the US consulate for the country (countries) you're interested in.

Personally, I have found living and working in Italy to be a tremendous experience. I've been very happy here.

You are very lucky because the quality of living is out of this world . Making friends is very easy even from the oppisite sex. The culture shock will be when you interact with your co-workers they will not stab you in the back or spread rumors against you but rather have a nice beer with you

You need to find a company to sponsor you, or else you will not be able to work. You can get a Working Holidaymakers Visa, but that means you'll only be able to stay a year. Good luck!

Honestly France and the UK don't have any work. UK honestly it is pointless to move there unless you are rich. My Canadian friend moved to London because his wife is British and he hates it there and no one would hire him so he worked crappy jobs under the table and is trying to get his wife to agree to move back to Canada.

France you will need to know French and have a specialty to get hired. Some reason France and the UK have no problem accepting third worlders but if you have a French or English, Scottish, Welsh surname, they reject your application.

I actually went to France first to join the French Foreign Legion, A lot of French want to live in the US, they think hollywood movies are like America. Brits don't seem to want to live in the US but move there because there is nothing for them in the UK.
