The ones I've found offer very little other than how to purchase their programs.

AVG is an excellent free anti-virus program ... http://free.grisoft.com

I haven't been all that impressed w/ any of the anti-spyware programs whether they be free or paid ... windows defender from Microsoft is free, and it is as good as any of them I suppose. Look for it at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads

Most free software on the Internet can offer very little things because money is very crucial when it comes to running a business and developing complex programs,so simply you can not expect free programs to be extremely useful and satisfy your needs immediately. On the other hand, there are some programs I've seen so far which are incredibly handy. such as AVG anti-virus free edition.. you should try it and see if it's capable of providing you with scanning infected files. I guess you won't be unhappy.

This are the best choices that i recommend AVG free edition, Spybot S&D, Ad-adware 2007 SE, Zonealarm Free firewall nd Advanced windowscare 2. All the other people has posted excellent answers so i wont tell the same thing all over again, this are the links from trusted sites and their reviews of those softwares.

I like Avira. It's free, rates better than most of the pay-for-use AV's & It's German based so they are 5 hrs. ahead of the US. They often are the first responders to new viruses because they are already awake when it's 5 am in NYC.

PS. Don't buy Norton. Every person I know w/ 2007 NAV switched because it slowed their cpt's down to a stand still.

AVG works pretty well. The main thing that I like about it is that it automatically sends updates to your computer concerning new threats. The Only downside is that it does not check for spyware but only for viruses. However, if you really want to be fully protected, you ought to go with Norton. It costs about $50, but it is well worth it in protecting your PC.

Try going to www.download.com and see what they have available. But be aware you get what you pay for. You can get a quality program like McAfee for around $35.
