Ban the BNP, sounds great. But hang on a minute, In my home town, the BNP, for the only time in their history, became the official opposition about four years ago.

During that time they never put an alternative budget forward, nay more, they never even turned up to listen to the budget being put forward by the ruling party on the council.

In fact the only thing that they have opposed is, after our town received funding of 180 million pounds to build new super schools, they said that it was not necessary to build new schools on the basis that, wait for it , "BUILDINGS DONT TEACH".

Obviously the thought of the BNP in power anywhere sends shivers down the spine and for good historical reasons.

But you know, with the laugh of seeing them not knowing what the hell to do in local goverment, I must say I would have enjoyed seeing them so humiliated if they had won full control of the council.

The people of our town would have been so shocked to see them making a complete balls of things that the BNP would have never recovered from it.

And it would have been there for the whole country to see.

I am talking about Burnley of course.

The BNP is a legitimate political party that gives people an avenue to act on the government. Even people whose opinions you do not like still have the right to participate democratically in a free society. Would you prefer they work peacefully within the system or work outside the system and resort to violence? If you don't like the BNP, then don't support them. But you do not have a right to silence those who do.

No they should only be beaten by argument of the case against them . All that happens when you ban something like this is they get strength and operate underground .
If any of their members break the laws on racist incitement then they should be charged and brought to trial , which is the same for any individual no matter what their politics are .

No. This is a free country where everyone has a right to their opinions. If you ban one person or persons, you will have to ban others. Do you want to live in a police state?

on what grounds?

they are a legitimate political party

you don't have to vote for them - but they should not be banned

defeat them if you want by voting for other parties, so they do not gain power

if they are banned people will begin to think that they do not have a voice and may strengthen the support of this party, which would come back under a new name

Freedom of speech?
Freedom of opinion?
Free society?
These are all values upon which our democratic society is based.

Let the BNP speak.
Let them have their opinions.
Let them canvass for votes in our democratic and free society.

Express your personal feelings by ignoring them and not voting for them. That way you keep the freedoms that our grandparents and forefathers fought for and which we should all cherish but you retain your personal power to vote for who you choose.
