I currently have 1gb of RAM on my laptop. I am thinking of upgrading it to 2 1gb slots (4GB). Is it worth it, and what will this do to my laptop?
Thanks in advance.

Ok well a couple of things. First of all in order to get to a total of 4GB of RAM you would have to be upgrading to 2 2GB slots. With 2x 1GB you end up with 2GB RAM in total. RAM or Random Access Memory is basically what regulates the amount of work your computer can handle at a given time. Each process that your computer runs uses a portion of the avalible RAM. For instance running Windows will constantly be using RAM, opening programs like MS Word uses a little bit more RAM. More coplicated processes like video players and graphically intensive games with use significant amounts of RAM.
Adding more RAM will increase your computers ability to handle running multiple programs at the same time. If you use intensive programs, (for instance I play World of Warcraft) or have Windows Vista installed on your computer (this takes up to 1.5GB just to run) then adding additional memory will make a significant differance to your overall performance. If you use your computer only for general tasks like e-mail or Word documents then it is likely not worth the expense.

Upgrading it to 2 1gb slots would only give you 2gb of RAM,not 4.
Secondly make sure your laptop can even handle that much RAM. Most laptops have only one spare slot for extra RAM

Maximising your RAM is the single most cost-effective way of speeding up your PC, especially if you run several programs at once.

There is a maximum amount of RAM your motherboard can accept; generally 2 GB or sometimes 4 GB. So check your motherboard manual first. Also ensure that the new RAM is of similar speed and type as the existing RAM.

Good luck. I hope it does the trick.

it will speed up your machine no end, you can have many more apps running before it will slow down. I feel that I will always go the the maximum amount possible..
