Internet and phone is provided through two different companies which is why I'm wondering this. I read about a filter, but what's that?

i have comcast broadband with a wireless router. version is the phone company.

If you r using dsl, you can connect one splitter. If it is a dialup i dont think this splitter will do the job. but u can try that.

Place a *70 before the dialup number your using to dial out on and this will prevent this from happening.

I think that you have dial-up which means that the phone line and the internet are on the same line. You should contact your internet provider and tell them that you want DSL or something like that.
