Several U.S. presidents have been Freemasons. In general, they are religiously oriented. They have some power via influence in who they know, but not enough to take over the country by any means. So that puts them at the level of a moderate-sized political interest group.
They are mostly benign, with an attention to charitable work in their community. When you hear about the "Shriners" and their children's hospitals (at least one Burn specialty and at least one Crippled Children specialty), you generally learn that they sponsor fund-raising events for those kids. The Shrine is an auxiliary social organization that is an adjunct to the Freemasons.
They like to think that they only admit members of good character, though when my Dad was alive, some of the guys in his lodge made me stop and think. But they could have been aberrations. Most of the Freemasons I have met were OK guys.
I never joined the Freemasons because I personally don't believe in secret societies. But I don't disrespect them.

We are merely a fraternity dedicated to making good men better, as far as power goes, all the BS on the net makes us that much cooler thereby giving us more members. (thats how I became interested.) And as far as good or bad, find a non-profit organization better. It's a trick question, you can"t..

Yes, we do wield enormous power. We are neither good nor bad, and our agenda is the evolution of the human soul.

Interesting question. I've often wondered myself. They seem to be sort of shadowy, I'll be watching for answers from someone who knows.
