my sister was induced monday morning at 37 1/2 weeks due to pre-eclampisa. during the labor she was given magnesium sulfate without being told that it could cause serious side effects with the baby. after 13 hrs of labor she started pushing. While pushing the fht dropped to 32 and the baby didn't recover. She was rushed to emergeny c-section. Baby was born and was needing oxygen. Kaylee was born at 645pm and at 415am she was flown to childrens hosptial because she was having trouble breathing. Once she got to childrens she's been perfect. All tests are pointing to the magnesium sulfate causing the problems. When we approached the hosptial where she deliverd and the nurses, they keep avoiding the questions. I want to know is it legal for them to administer meds without tell the patient it could cause complications...what should we do. please help

I was present at the induction and have copies of all papers signed. She never signed consent for the mag nor was counciled about any meds given. Rn's are supposed to tell patients what the complictions are of any med given.

That sounds like it is against the law, and the nurses behavior is very suspicious. If she lets the hospital know that she plans on getting an attorney, they will probably give her a big fat check! I know the childs safety is much more important, but they messed up and need to pay in order to learn to not do this to vulnerable women in labor!

The nurses at the hospital would have administered any medication only with a doctor's orders. I suggest that you leave the nurses alone as they will not legally be able to discuss anything with you. Any questions of impropriety would be handled by the legal counsel of the hospital. In all reality, your sister likely signed several waivers and consent forms prior to the induction and was likely told of the possible side effects of the drugs as a whole and not each individual drug. All health care professionals are deluged with lawsuits and threats of lawsuits these days and any procedure you have done is accompanied by a form that you have to sign before the procedure will be done. Magnesium Sulfate is giving during an induction in women with pre eclampsia to reduce the risk of seizures. Here is a good website that explains the use of magnesium sulfate in situations like your sisters: http://www.webmd.com/baby/magnesium-sulfate-for-seizure-prevention-during-pregnancy. I suggest that you don't do anything. Your niece is fine, there was no intent to cause harm, and the administration of this drug is common practice in this situation.

Sorry that happened.

I was given that due to my blood pressure as well. I was told that it would make me feel like i had the flu, and i would have to stay in bed because of the effects on ME. I was never told it would do anything to the baby. (my baby was born w/out any problems.)
I would advise to seek legal aid in that. Sometimes the heart rate will drop in a baby during pushing... if the cord gets around the baby's neck, or other factors.
I hope both are doing fine now.

I was given mag sulfate when i suffered from toxemia. i was never told of the risks either....at least i don't remember being told. a lot of what happened that day are a real blur to me. it was such a chaotic time and so much was going on. i had to be delivered by emergency c-section. i was on mag sulf for 2 days after delivering to regulate my blood pressure.

i honestly believe that the benefits outweighed the risks in my particular situation. i'm sure that my dr wouldn't have given me the mag sulf if it was too risky.

it sounds like your sister and nephew happened to be one of a few people who had the misfortunate to experience those scary side effects.

For myself, i try to focus on the gorgeous blessing that i was given. thinking back to the day she was born is something i wouldn't wish on anyone. but i am able to push those memories aside and focus on being the best mom i can be.

Wow, I was given mag. sulfate in two of my pregnancy's, thats some nasty stuff, makes you feel absolutely awful! I never knew of the risks involved, I was never told, how scary is that! I would def. tell your sister to talk to an attorney, the earlier she does that the better...

First, I was at a friend's house for one last 'girls night' before the baby was born. I had been having contractions on & off all day but nothing major. I get up to go to the bathroom and lost my plug. Then contractions became really regular and way more intense. So around 9pm, I call hubby to come & get me - we gotta go! He calls me back like 30 minutes later and ACTUALLY says to me: "Are you in a hurry?". UMMM... HELLO!?!?!? Just having a baby here!!! He wanted to be sure he had enough time to go pickup a buddy of his to drive my car home so it wouldn't be sitting for 3 days at my friends' house. Second, when we got to the hospital my husband tried kicking the anesthesiologist out of the room (because he was going to put a needle in my spine...). As much pain as I was in, I threatened to leave my hubby for the anesthesiologist if he didn't let the man stick that needle in my spine. Then doc comes in and I'm all set & ready to push... he didn't even have gloves on yet - just his white DR coat. He says "Well, let's see where you're at"... and tells me to give him one push. As everyone is standing at least 5 feet away (with the exception of one nurse) I gave a push... and heard a cry. Doc's face went pale... he's like "Well, I guess I should put gloves on, huh?". WELL DUH!!!! :-) One more push & out she came!
