Rumors say it is

The planetary/etc lineups which will occur in 2012 happen every 35,000 years. If the world has been here for 15,000,000,000 years, it has gone through this event about a half million times before without being destroyed...so why should it be destroyed this time? The rumor started because an idiot misunderstood the Mayan calandar. It ends then. That does not mean the world ends. It means a new cycle starts the whole thing over. It is like the sunspot cycle which repeats every 11 years.

no

Rumors do not say it is.

Only people trying to keep the rumors (artificially) alive say it is.

The so-called rumor is (weakly) based on the fact that one (of five) Long Count of the Mayan calendar will come to an end on December 21, 2012. It is, in essence, the same as Y2k (remember? that is when all our computers blew up and we all died), except it is with somebody else's calendar.

The Mayan Long Counts may have been based on the Earth's precession cycle (25,800 years). One Long Count being close to 1/5 of the cycle. If the Mayans had set it correctly, the Long Count would have finished just as the winter solstice position was the closest to the centre of the Galaxy (still, over 5 degrees off is not the "alignment" that hoaxers try to push). But they were off by a few years. There exists a Mayan mythology volume (written well after the calendar was created) that says that there will be great changes when the Long Count is over.

But then, there are lots of writings that claim our lives change according to the animal for who the present year is named in the Chinese calendar and even lots more writings that state your chances of winning the lottery (any one you want) based on whether you were born between March 21 and April 20 (not the same animals).

There are even some participants (in the 2012 hoax) who try to play with the parameters of the fictitious planet Nibiru (the planet is a result of what could be poor translation of some old Sumerian document) which was supposed to come back around 2085. They are changing some parameters to "make it return" around 2012 and cause the end of the world.

On an ever-so-slightly more scientific note (if only because of the person), Isaac Newton had predicted that the end of the world cound not be before the year AD 2060. He does not say that it will end that year, only that it cannot end before that year.

However, his approach would not be considered very scientific today. Same with hoaxers and Mayan calendar doom-sayers.

We don't know. But one thing is for sure. Either way, in 2013 people will not be asking about the Mayan calendar / planet X / Nibiru / asteroid / polar shift / comet / galactic alignment drivel any more. It will be something else.

Remember who told you the world would end in 2012. In 2013 you can put them down as a prophet, a fool or a liar. I know which two of the three are most likely.

Rumors also say that JFK, Hitler are hold up in the some Andean Chalet waiting for Elvis.

There is the possibility that a large - undetected meteor - could suddenly strike the earth and destroy all life as we know it.

All we know if that two things are going to occur by then,

1. We will surely be at or have passed "peak" for oil - which for folks at Exxon/Mobil and for people who drive Hummers, will be the end of the world since it means that costs for oil will become increasingly "prohibitive".

see http://www.theoildrum.com

2. The Mayan codex and "Long Count" calendar are fascinating subjects of archeological significance, but also have alot of huxters and scam-artists working the 2012 angle the same way the Y2k folks tried to cash in on the end of the Christian millennium (only computer folks had anything to worry about).

This as prophecied by the Mayans has been misunderstood. Basically the people that studie these ancient writings are clueless on what it is speaking of. The Mayans recieved this calender from Quetz, not to be confused with Quetzacoatl, and it prophecies the end of a certain cycle I won't go into detail about.

No , well the Mayans think that because it's when the calender of the Mayans stop, in 2012 is when they think is the "end of the world".
No, only god knows when it would be the end of the world.

No, but because of the turmoil that will be created by the U.S. election taking place that year, everyone will act like it is.
