incredibly unbelievable!.....whats the problem here....WHO has possibly been offended by a state song and why?.....its been the state song since 1913...almost 100 years and all of a sudden oops! someones feelings got hurt...there is one questionable word in the entire song and its darkie...why not just change the word....and by the way...nothing else in the song even suggests that the word darkie refers to any person or race....it could refer to a dark time or hour where its being used in the song...gimme a break!...how rediculous.....soon someone will be offended because we casually refer to anyplace below maryland and over to texas as the "Bible Belt"....sure its informal but some athiest, agnostic, or what-the-hell-ever religion is going to be "offended" by the connotation and will try to change heritage and a way of life forever because their toes were stepped on....where in the world is this going to end?....and Floridians ~ what do you think about the state song having to change?

Bonny, here is the verse ~ no, nix that, here is the entire song
Way down upon de Swanee ribber,
Far, far away,
Dere's wha my heart is turning ebber,
Dere's wha de old folks stay.
All up and down de whole creation
Sadly I roam,
Still longing for de old plantation
And for de old folks at home.
All de world am sad and dreary,
Ebry where I roam,
Oh! darkies how my heart grows weary,
Far from de old folks at home.
All round de little farm I wandered
When I was young,
Den many happy days I squandered,
Many de songs I sung.
When I was playing wid my brudder
Happy was I
Oh! take me to my kind old mudder,
Dere let me live and die.
One little hut amond de bushes,
One dat I love,
Still sadly to my mem'ry rushes,
No matter where I rove
When will I see de bees a humming
All round de comb?
When will I hear de banjo tumming
Down in my good old home?
and no its not a soapbox, its a question about how other floridians view this change

really really missing the point here..... the point is that people are taking things entirely too far.....the state song of alabama has the words "make us worthy, God in Heaven"....and also mentions moses....how long before that song has to change?....the whole crux is that if you look hard enough EVERYTHING can be offensive to SOMEONE for ANY reason....so in the end we're all jumping through hoops to please one or few so that masses are displeased or displaced....this whole thing is the equivalent of Stella Liebeck suing McDonalds for burning herself on their coffee....its frivolous....if you cant get where im coming from on this then i dont know what to tell you except consider where precedence comes from in every complaint

It is a lovely tune and the words make you miss your home. However, I would like to see the words "tidied up" so they aren't in "slave dialect" and see how you can get rid of the "plantation". Otherwise, it's fine.

It sounds like you just want a soapbox to justify your own pre-existing ideologies. I'm moving to Broward County next year. My husband is a Florida native and he would definitely say, "And I should care about this because....."

But yea, who cares? The only people who care are those who already have a preexisting anti-PC opnion. Everybody's entitled to their own opinion, I guess.
