Testing products on animals? No pros that I can see. (Clarification - by "products" I mean frivolous human stuff like cosmetics, drugs are more under the research heading in my opinion)

Testing research on animals? There are a lot of negatives, but one pro that I can see is that sometimes it works. For example, let's say a research group wants to test a surgery or medication on animals with a condition and they actually cure it, in the hopes that they can cure it in humans as well. That's good all around--cured animals, hope for humans (now, if they do something TO the animals to afflict them with a condition just so they can try to cure it, I think that's pretty reckless and cruel).

Just my thoughts.

I have no pros when it comes to animal testing for cosmetic reasearch. If I want to wear make-up I feel that it should be my risk.
As far as medical research: I am all into saving lives. The lives of humans as well as the lives of other animals. Many people are going to say that they HATE all forms of animal research but they don't take the time to see that they condone it it some way every time that they feed their pets (all foods have been animal tested), every time that they take an aspirin or an antibiotic etc. the list is endless.
I have high blood pressure, a bad liver, a disfunctional thyroid... I guess you could say that I am thankful for animal research every day that I draw breath.
I wish that there was another way and I feel that there may be one in the near future... but for now...

Also: Would anyone in here deny their pet life saving medication that was developed by testing on other animals. All animal meds were tested on labratory subjects.

I agree with some of the above posters - I see no pros to testing cosmetics, household cleaners, etc. on animals. There are, however, a lot of pros to medical testing on animals - vaccines and treatments for diseases for both humans AND animals. Animal testing has also helped our veterinarians in tremendous ways and they are now better able to help our pets live longer, healthier lives.

No pros, all cons.

If you love animals, you must know how cruel testing is. You realize that animal testing is done for so many things that do not involve medicine, such as for cosmetics (i.e. pouring acids in rabbits' eyes--aka The Draize Test).

Government money has also funded silly scientific research that involved cutting cat's heads open and sticking electrodes on the brains to measure sexual stimulants just for the sake of knowledge. Nothing medicinal about that.

But, if you are really upset about how animals suffer, no where is the cruelty so extensive and horrendous as in the food industry.

I recommend you read a book about Henry Spira called "Ethics Into Action". It is a fascinating biography of a goodhearted activist who accomplished great things in his life.

I think that before we go after scientists, we must look to ourselves and how each of us individually contributes to torture, endorsing animal brutalization and exploitation with our money in the name of food, sport, and entertainment.

There are NO pros about animal testing. They can't tell you if they are hurting or whatever is being tested is working. How would you like it if you had unknown chemicals dropped into your eye, or a weird substance injected into your body? This question is disgusting. In my opinion, I think they should test on humans... maybe the death row people or something. No animal deserves to be tested on, it's cruel. At least with humans there is comminucation. If something is wrong they can tell you or if they are better they can show you.

I guess if it worked ok the animal didn't get hurt. and then people start using it. I still don't think it's right to use innocent animals for our benefit

err, there are none. the only, im serious, the ONLY reason animal testing happens is because its cheaper to do it this way without fear of court action if it goes wrong on a human. its disgusting.
what about paedophiles/rapists, use them for the testing, easy!

only positives being science has something to test.

although the animal/s doesn't/don't have a voice nor gets a chance to consent to it being used for the tests.
