The wheels are only part of the problem, that corrosive road salt will cause the motor and any other metal parts to corrode quickly. I learned the hard way on a brand new bike. S100 makes a good quality product to spray on the bike after you detail wash it and clean it, then you spray the stuff on all metal parts and let it set till your ready to get it out in the spring. Then just wash it thoroughly and your ready to ride. Of course this is assuming that you know how to winterize the entire bike and what to do in the spring as well.

You'll want to start by cleaning the wheels thoroughly....clean enough to eat off of. Follow with a light application of rubbing alcohol, paint prep, etc to remove any lingering grease you cannot see. If you don't have a clean surface to start with none of the protection methods will work.

You've got several options from here. You can use a wheel sealant such as the one found here:

http://www.poorboysworld.com/wheel-sealant.htm

Or you can use a teflon based product (recommended) for protection. Dupont offers a complete line of teflon based wheel care products. The standard teflon wheel protection should suit you well. It runs about $8 a bottle...1 bottle should be more than enough to do all your wheels.

Apply it liberally and work it into all surfaces of the wheel. For best results do this in a garage once the wheels have warmed up to a normal temp. Reapply the Teflon coating once a month or so (depending on amount of snow/ice/salt) and you'll add some life to the chrome finish on your wheels.

The only way to truly protect them however is to remove them and put the stock back on during the winter months. There is no product or method known that will completely protect your finish from the elements. The teflon will certainly help but even if one small area loses protection the salt will begin a very complicated chemical reaction....eating away at the finish from where it started and eventually growing into the areas that did have sufficient protection.

If you need to keep your 22s running strong in the winter months or don't have the old stock wheels then the sooner the better. Take your time and be absolute sure the wheel is clean of any brake dust, grease, debris, etc prior to applying any protectant.

Hope this helps!

I own http://www.wickedproducts.ca and we offer Wicked Products Metal Polish. It has a sealant/protectant in the compound that will help protect the rim in addition to cleaning it. I suggest you check out the website and read the reviews. Who knows, you might be so impressed with the product, you may want to become a dealer.
