I am very scared. This snake has been at my front door twice now. We have a pond in our back yard and I think it may be a water moccasin. Any advice on what it is/how to get it to go away would be great.

It is definitely NOT a water moccasin. I can tell you that it is DEFINITELY not venomous. It does not resemble, even remotely, any venomous species of snake native to North or Central America.

Sometimes, though, caution is still warranted. Not long ago, I saw on TV where a child found a snake in his garage and was picking it up. Luckily, it never tried to bite him. It was a five-foot long Gamboon Viper, which is deadly to an adult, even more so to a child.

However, you aren't likely to have such a situation unless you live in Florida.

In this case, your snake is a harmless water snake. Exactly which subspecies, I don't know, but that is my bet. They can bite, however, but you won't die or get sick.

Its pattern looks more like that of a rat snake or maybe a mutated phase of a corn snake, but I think it's too heavily built to be one of those.

I am quite familiar with snakes of all species all over the world. I've been a snake enthusiast since I was 5. I'm 40 now. This doesn't look like any venomous snake I know of.

So don't worry.

The head isn't the right shape to be a water moccasin. They have triangle shaped heads, but its hard to tell from the picture. Venomous snakes have a triangle shaped head. I don't know what it is though. I looked through the net and it does resemble some of the water snakes. Take away it's food and anyplace warm and it should go away. It's kinda of pretty though!

Ignore that jerk above that said to kill it! It most likely is not poisonouse. Call animal control and have it picked up and humanely relocated. Or use a broom to brush/scare it away. It is there for a reason, maybe mice are good pickins there, or it could be someones lost pet, or someone may have just let it go. Please do not kill this snake. Do some online research to try and find out what kind of snake it is. Do not be scared of it, just dont get to close and it should not hurt you. Snakes are only aggressive if they believe you will harm them.
Good luck!-to both you and the snake,

And to the one above that says kill it "drop dead"!

I do not live in Fl. but i do know snakes very well. To me it looks like it could be a southern banded water snake. NONvenomous!! Please, if you are scared of snakes, go to your state website, or any other website and look up the snakes in your area. It really will save you from fearing what doesnt need to be feared.
I really hope this helps!

It looks like a Corn Snake but the pic is too dark to be sure, could also be a banded water snake if you are really close to the water, but not likely, but no not a moccasin

That is a banded water snake and as long as you have that pond where it can feed it will stick around don't worry it is harmless just don't try to pick it up they tend to be a little bitey when disturbed . When you do see it you should be able to just sho it away it is more scared of you than you are of it . you can call animal control they will remove and relocate it

Ugh I agree with that person, ignore the one that said to "chop off it's head" That's just completley idiotic. I'd get some kind of fishing net, box it up, and transpant it somewhere else (of course wear some gloves just in case something goes wrong), or call the reptile specialist or something. I wish I had a snake living at my house! They are beautiful creatures.

DEFINITELY NOT A WATER MOCCASIN!!!

It looks like a banded water snake. And its not venomous. Do the snake a favor and leave it alone.

I do not think it is a water moccasin because the pattern and colours dont match. It is probably a variety of corn snake that usualy goes into homes and barns in the USA.
