Well, i am from Ireland and it is a tradition to go to midnight mass on Christmas eve. For a lot of people this is the only time of the year that they will ever go to church. A big contrast to the image of thius country being a very holy one. The commercial side has really taken over here in the last 20 years and most people are more interested in getting presents then anything else (i would be one of those people). Ireland spends more money per household then any other country in the world at Christmas along with the U.S and Canada. It is also a tradition in nearly every house with young children that Santa will bring presents on Christmas morning. i am sure you are familiar with this.
Christmas is also a big time for eating and drinking in Ireland. St Stephen's Day (the day after Christmas) is one of the busiest nights out of the year in Ireland. Most bars and pubs will put the price of their drinks up at this time of year as they know people will give a little extra for a pint during the festive season. Turkey is the main food eaten on Christmas day alond with cake and plum pudding. Basically if you don't indulge during Christmas here then people find it very strange.
