It's a fine line. A private business is just that, private. Meaning the owners have the right to express their views, within reason. When it crosses the line from expressing their views, and forcing thier views, is when it starts to violate law.

I don't think the workplace needs to be secular, it just needs to be not opressive or pushy about it.

Example: I worked for a company that had crosses on the wall, pictures of President Bush EVERYWHERE, and even had a cross as the major element of the company logo. Hardly secular. However, never once was anyone made to feel like they were obligated to be Christian, participate in anything religious, or share the political views of the owner. Nor was anyone asked theirs beliefs or views. And all company functions never did anything to make anyone feel uncomfortable.

Depends on the workplace. Many businesses are conducted as religious businesses, and that is just fine. I think it's up to the business. If you don't want to work there, then don't. Go somewhere else. Everyone has a right to practice whatever religion they wish, AND they also have the right to be FREE from practicing any religion. I personally will never work for a religious employer. But, that doesn't mean that other people shouldn't be able to if they want to.

It is up to the business owner, unless it is a government job. In that case, yes, the workplace should MOST DEFINITELY be secular.
