He was imprisoned for trying to promote equality in South Africa.
The South Africans had a system called Apartheid, which meant that the races were "separate but equal." Mandela wanted to change that system.

He was a dangerous radical to the Government of South Africa plotting the over throw of the country as they saw it. The Apartheid type of government can down many years later partly because of him.
