f ^-1(x) = (x+2)/3

If f(a) = 4, then a = 2

Don't understand the rest of your question. Is the x a multiplication sign or should it be surrounded by parentheses?

y = 3x-2
(y+2)/3 = x
Interchange x and y:
(x+2)/3 = y is the inverse.

f^-1(4) = (4+2)/3 = 2. Not sure where the f(a)=4 is needed.
