I have a my00 impreza turbo which decided to cut out while driving, I have changed the fuel relay under the dash but there is still no power to the pump. I have run a (switched & fused) live to the fuel pump and the car starts and drives perfect. Any ideas what could be the problem/solution? also is it safe to use the car with the live i have run to the pump? if not why not? thanks in advance the subaru has been great up until now!

You need a schematic to troubleshoot this problem,it could be the fuse for the pump is blown or a break in the line from the fuse to the pump, or at the ignition switch, yes its safe to run with live wire, after all it originally was a hot wire once the ignition switch was turned on,make sure you remember to shut your switch off and get this repaired as soon as possible.

There is obviouly a break in the wiring somewhere. They jury-rig you set up is dangerous in only one aspect. It will not shut off when the ignition does and can cause a pressurised fuel line to drip raw fuel into your intake. (assuming you have a throttle-body or carbuerator) or into the combustion chamber if you have a multiport FI system.

There is also an outside chance of a fire if you have an accident. Since simply switching off your ignition will not disable the fuel pump, if you are in an accident and are injured or otherwise unable to shut it off emergency response personnel may assume turing off your ignition disabled your fuel pump. If your vehicle has a fuel leak the pump will pump the wole gas tank out through it. I know this from back in the day when we used electric fuel pumps on our hot rods!

I feel like a broken record saying this but it is often the case in these matters. Have you done or had one any repairs or installed any equipment on this car reciently? If so, that would be the first place to look for a bad connection.

-Merry Christmas!

Start with the basics. Remove and clean your battery terminals; make sure there is no corrosion and that all auxiliary wires coming off the battery are connected and clean. Use steel or plastic wool to improve connections here. Shampoo your engine at a do-it-yourself car wash (use Gunk original formula). When you're sure that everything is up to snuff, check the operation of your ignition switch. Remove the part of the dash that reveals the back of the switch and make sure the electrical part of the switch has not separated from the mechanical part of the switch. Good Luck!!!

There's probably an emergency shut-off switch in the rear of the vehicle, and it has tripped. That why running a live wire to the pump is working. You've by-passed the em. cut-off.

I thought the fuel relay switch was under the hood. Confirm by checking your owners manual.

Fuse or a shorted wire.
