is this sufficient proof that buyer protection is not just for ebay purchases,

I am looking to buy something off gumtree but the seller lives miles away and the only way of me paying her is through pay pal, i suggested sending her half which is 500 pounds then she sends the item and if its to my liking i then send her the rest of the money, if the item isnt to my liking i can cancel the 500 pound payment.

does that sound right?

PayPal gives you the same protection that any credit card purchase offers. Get in writing what you are purchasing and the condition and a guarantee from the seller that you can return the item and receive a refund if it isn't as described. If there is a problem you can dispute it through PayPal and have the payment returned.

No .. please look at it from the sellers point of view .. she risks you walking off with the item for half the price.... (why should she trust you when plainly you don't trust her ?)

Anyway, no seller in their right mind would agree that "if the item isnt to my liking i can cancel the 500 pound payment" ...
