I really got into the Redwall series by Brian Jacques when i was about 13. I'm 24 now, and am still collecting them. Last i checked there were 19 or 20 books in the series.
The series focuses on Redwall Abby, inhabited by woodland creatures (mice, squirrels, moles, and badgers, just to name a few). In each book, there is an evil creature (usually a rat, stoat, wildcat, fox, you get the idea) that has plans to destroy the Abby or do some harm to the peace-loving Abby-dwellers.
It may sound a bit childish, but the character development is spectacular. Each book has a hero/heroine who starts off as an inexperienced young creature, but rises to the challenge of beating the enemy. I could go on for pages about the books, but you should just read them for yourself.
If you do start reading them, I'd suggest starting in the beginning. There is no order and no continuing story, but the first book, "Redwall" will give you a base knowledge which will help for the rest of the books. The second one you should read is Mossflower, which will give you an even better back-story and complete your knowledge. After those two, feel free to pick any one and read at your leisure. If you do decide to read them, I can almost guarantee your enjoyment.

Do you like nonfiction? "Ibn al-Haytham: First Scientist" tells the fascinating, true story of a medieval Muslim scholar who overcame bouts of mental illness to develop the scientific method two hundred years before the Europeans learned of it—by reading his books. It was just chosen by California Readers to be part of the 2008 California Collection for students. You can find reviews of the book and a sample chapter at http://www.ibnalhaytham.net/
