....it *doesn't* get dark by 4 pm every day around the time of the winter solstice?
I'm wondering if it is worth moving a little closer to the Equator.

Yeah, I am from South Africa and it is never dark here at 4PM. And it is a beautiful country with an amazing climate. We have everything here, from beautiful shores, to rain forests, deserts, flower fields, wine farms, mountains covered in snow in wintertime, beautiful waterfalls etc. Not to mention the diverse cultures. I know I am losing the point here, but since you mentioned moving, you might as well consider SA! lol! In Argentina (at least in Buenos Aires), it usually gets dark at 6 pm during winter. Sometimes a bit earlier, like 5:30 but no more than that. And during summer sometimes it's almost 10 pm and you can still see some light in the sky.

You have only about another 10 days to go and it will start to get lighter in the morning and dark later at night. Enjoy the contrast and remember the nearer the equator you get the less variation there is in the length of the days. In Spin it goes dark at about 20;00 hrs even in the summer

in California it starts getting dark from around 5:30 pm,,
at 4 pm, it should be kinda moderately bright outside.

Sunny Florida. In the summer we have no twighlight however. It goes from sunset to dark in less than 30 minutes.

It gets dark here around 4 pm and it's depressing.

Hmmm-- well, it does start getting dark around 4pm-ish here in Reno...
Move towards the equator? Maybe.

gets dark here at 5 pm in winter.... gee now im not sure if its 6pm lol as winter was so far back,... but its better here in OZ, you may just love it..... if change does not worry you... but then the heat may kill ya... my daughter & her guy's in England at the moment holidaying in Europe :) & you didnt want to know that...:):) lol
