The double negative here is making me pause.

If there is no suffering would the be no compassion.

I see a cause and effect question here.

I am pretty sure that need for compassion seems in response to the presence of suffering, but; would there be no compassion if no suffering existed? I think there would be.

I think what we find here is a supply and demand problem. It seems that compassion is only aimed at the people who suffer, but if there were no extremes of suffering then all would suffer the same and compassion would be directed at the world at large. In other words, everyone would care for everyone equal to the the strain they find the world in.

Some how that all sounds a little idyllic and non specific but as things become more equal and no one can be said to truly suffer then all can be said to benefit from the love and compassion of others. Compassion will take on the look of agape or fraternal love. It will still be compassion but it will look like it is there for everyone instead of just a few.

My point is this, I see love or compassion as existing independent of need such that if there is no need then it will still exist. It will just have another name, but a rose by any other name is still a rose.

So the answer is No. There would still be compassion even without suffering.

God is compassionate and it is not through suffering. Compassion means in its Latin roots suffer-with. But that is the non-suffering person taking on the suffering of the other.
It's a philosophical question whether a compassionate person automatically grows 'compasssion' when a suffering situation is encountered.

Well...I imagine that if no one suffered, there would be nothing to be compassionate about. Everyone would be happy go lucky, and no one would be in physical or emotional pain. There would be no wars, diseases or critical accidents.
