The British, unlike the French, and Italians, did attempt to pay back the bulk of their American debt; further, they were sympathetic of American attempts to financially stabilize the perpetually economically and politically precarious Weimar Republic, an effort which, had it not been for the Great Depression, could conceivably have taken the wind out of the sails of the German far right; not least of which included the Nazis.

It was more the other way around. The US was financing everyone's debt to everyone else.

Funny how its all switched around now...
