For 2 good guys on my team at work, we spend plenty of time working alongside each other.
And for 2 pretty good friends, we hang out every weekend.

I make $40k annually gross.

Just moved to the U.S. a couple of years ago, so I'm still catching up on all this gift-buying frenzy :-)

Making $40k is truly irrelevant to what you want to spend on Christmas gifts. If you make $40k in Kansas.. you are a high roller, but here in California, $40k is like making nothing. Anyways, it really all depends on your monthly budget. I think a good amount to spend on a best friend is $40-$50.. but on a co-worker.. no more than $25. But it's really your call. Best Wishes!

I used to buy gifts for all of my staff as well as direct co-workers (peers) and then gifts for support staff that have saved my neck throughout the year...
I`d spend $20 each for the staff and co-workers and $10ìsh for the butt savers...
But then I realized that I was stressing so much about the gifts and whether it would be liked or useful and I had to have something similar for people at the same `level`so there wouldn`t be any issues... ugh...
So instead I pooled together all of that money I would spend and I`d adopt a child living in poverty and buy clothes and toys, food vouchers, etc... and give the co-workers a note saying that their gift had gone to someone in need and explaining the child`s story... i`d give small gifts (jars of soup mix or cookie mix or quotes).
The jars became one of the most popular gifts to get every year (second only to the annual cheesecake from a VP)...
I expanded the giving to my friends and the gift in lieu of the bottle of wine for a hostess gifts when we go to parties. Only heard one grumble (from someone who is a politician, figures).

Since you`ve have guys to give for - gift certificate for a coffee place or a six-pack of beer is an easy out. $15-20 is the right range IMHO

Honestly, it's not the cost of the item as much as the thought put behind making it personal and meaningful. Usually, though, office parties where there are gifting games during the holidays, $20 is the range for gifts, and peoplve have gotten VERY creative within that range.

I would say that's a good place to start. You can go up a bit from there if you find the *perfect* gift for them, but don't worry that the value of a gift is in the price tag. As the old saying goes, "It is the thought that counts."

I don't spend anything on my co-workers but on my two best friends that are my family I spend about $20 each (and that is with the baked goods that I give them in addition to the gifts.

For your co-workers, I would say that a good gift to show them your appreciation needn't extend beyond the $10 limit. However, I prefer to give my co-workers a homemade gift, like a tin of cookies, so they can feel appreciated without feeling pressured to return the favor and give ME a gift.

For your friends, I would say to go ahead and maybe spend $20-30 on each of them. And get each of them something personal that they will love, something that reflects their individual interests or something you all like to do together.

When we have office parties we are limited to $15 per person. That way it is not evident how much $$$$ you make so nobody feels bad about the price of the gift.

You can save money by doing something homemade. For example, you can buy inexpensive cookie tins, then bake cookies for everyone and put them in the tins. You don't have to spend a ton of money, but you show you care.

There is no set amount of gifts. It could just be family and a couple of close friends. Your boss maybe.

Work your self a budget and shop around if you see something that is in you budget and you think that they would like it...go and get it. Christmas is expensive, i would say about $20-$30. but that is up to you and what you see. hope that helps.
