some thousand years ago there was a kingdom. one day a giant dragon the size of a mountain arrived, he plundered the kingdom killing thousands of people destroying enormous amounts of property. every week the dragon started doing same thing, . as the technology available to them was very inferior, they had no way to kill the dragon , the wise men said why not make a deal with it, so that a thousand men will be sent every week to the dragon as its food, and in retun it will let the kingdom live peacefully. the deal was struck. years went by and the deal was kept from both sides.slowly a lottery system was introduced to send people, roads and trollies were constucted to send the people to the mountain, hundreds of thousand people were employed in the industry, one day a young man came with a new technology which could kill the dragon. but the people became worried . they argued there will be enormous job lost, economic slump and besides chances of killing th dragon was uncertain .

That's a good analogy for so many situations in today's world:

1. Oil - don't kill that dragon by using solar/wind/tidal power.

2. Medical care - don't kill that dragon by having government sponsored universal health care.

3. Iraq - don't kill that dragon by withdrawing the troops.

And the list could go on and on. Lots of already very wealthy people have vested interests in keeping the status quo the way it is, despite all the losses and disadvantages, because they're making a big fat profit.

It all depends on whose dragon is getting gored.

yes.. a hard question........... how about this?

Test out the probability of the machine working... Yes, there will be a major decrease in bussiness if the dragon is killed and the lottery is closed down.
But think of it this way, if they one day have a food shortage and many people die, then you wont have enought to send to the dragon.. and evidently by not destroying the dragon there is a chance that you are destrying your own city.

Kill the dragon, then send the unemployed to Newfoundland and Labrador in Canada where we will find a "make work" project for them.

I wld say that they should at least try to free themselves from the dragon, thou the chances are uncertain. It's better to die once than to see yourself dyin' everyday.

It's of no use to be engaged in a job that leads to the end of life.

I know it's easy to say these, but hard to implement. Even I would have done something else, had the same situation come to me. (Contradicting.... but it's life)

the townspeeps dont want you to kill the dragon as it no doubt supports a whole industry... and most of the city.
