In the morning today the free space was 900 MB, after few hours 650 MB, and now in the evening - 1.17GB.
Few month ago 3-4 GB.
I have firefox installed and regularly updated, scanned and no viruses found.
And hard drive only Windows xp and some Program Files - 2.5 GB in total.
Nothing else.
Old computer - only 7 GB.
Don't know what's going on.
Sb could help me?
Cannot do the defragmentation nor restore like a month ago or so...

Thanks guys - you helped me a lot.
Uninstalled some programs, i.e. HP, and installed it again and the free space capacity increased! 3 GB now!
Thanks again!

Well sounds like you really need a larger drive. The 7GB hard drive is so full you don't have enough room for "swap files" that Windows needs to operate. And that's why you can't defrag the drive.

Do disk cleanup and compress old files that may help but doubtful.

Really if you can't dump a few programs you need a larger HDD.

Thomas K may be onto something with the slowly depleting drive space. However, I think there may be another answer.

Usually older computers have very little in the way of system memory (RAM). Today's programs use more memory than the programs of old. When memory isn't available windows "pages" the information that is usually stored in memory. "Paging" is using hard drive space instead of memory to access the information it needs thus this hard drive space is known as "virtual memory".

I would start by emptying your recycle bin if you haven't already. Next go to start / accessories / system tools / disk clean up. Make sure everything has a check-mark beside it and run it. Next uninstall any unused programs. This should allow enough free space to defrag.

I would then agree that a new hard drive is in order. They are becoming more and more affordable. Check www.newegg.com for sales. Most HDs come with software that will allow you to make an image of your current drive so you can just swap them out and keep going from where you are now.

Good luck!

This is usually caused by the restore function in XP. XP takes snapshots of your hard drive so you can roll back to a previous snapshot in case your system gets hosed. It's not fool proof and takes up a bit of free space as you have experienced.

One thing you can do is turn off System Restore. This will delete all previous restore points, though, so be sure your system is running well. You won't be able to restore back. If you want to keep System Restore but your computer is running fine, turn off System Restore to delete the old restore points, and then turn it back on.

I've linked to a Microsoft knowledgebase article that explains how to do this.

Good luck!

Sounds somewhat normal. Seems like you have virtual memory on which will use part of your hard drive to act as RAM.

To see if you do, Right Click My Computer>>Properties>>Advanced Tab>>Click Settings under the Performance Section

Hi. Reboot into 'Safe mode' by tapping the F8 key while it boots. Defragment in this mode, run your malware programs, then reboot into 'Normal mode'.
