Personally, I don't believe in the good/evil scenario. I think
there are brilliant, thoughtful, bad and unbelievably sleazy choices in life( usually based on lack of experience and
bad parenting). It's OK to be fascinated with the dark side.
Go ahead, look into the bottomlesss pit...just don't jump
in there. Know ahead of time what you will and will not
do and don't waver when push comes to shove. If you're
talking about a guy who might be bad for you...it's usually
true. You already know so don't go there. If you do, you
deserve what happens. It's a dead end usually with life
long repercussions. Keep the open sign on your heart,
but limit your business hours.

Stay combat-ready.
Improvise with what life circumstance brings daily.
Keep the 'guard' itself fitted and armed with the latest of implements -- the guard must be ever kept switched on and at the ready in a moment's notice, which is one's greatest of defenses.
Among other things, the Heart is first of all a warrior, a battle-tested emissary of the Soul, and not the dribble that most make it out to be. Send the dribble to the emotional planes, which knows how to do the quality assurance and process the dribble and then send it back up for further undertakings.
The Heart is the great Council and the Counciller and none is before it; it presides over all that sets aside it, below it and behind it -- thus even the Mind does defer to it, which on not few occasions the Heart is required to militate against, and which, if the Heart so chooses, can nullify with but a snap of the fingers.
You may take a glimpse of things up there in the Clouds and Afar and all the fanciful things, but you cannot stay there. You are here and must bear heed to that at all times. For if you should not, someone will surely saunter along if not outright ambush and apprise you, to remind you that you are for now here on Earth, not somewhere up there in the Heavens. This is where the Heart has commissioned you for now.
The Heart suggests at all times that you ensure the 'guard' stays locked and loaded, ready to take aim or from the hip fire at will.
Evil must have its way. Good must have its. The Heart knows well this mandate and edict. Be not fooled or trifled otherwise.

Beyond the obvious answer of prayer, these things:
Making no provision for the flesh.
Taking care about what I see.
Taking care about what I hear.
Not thinking more highly of myself than I ought.
Remaining IN the word.
More than these, the human heart is evil to begin with, so crucifying the self daily is, as Christ had shown, necessary.
My old man just loves to crawl off the cross and tap me on the shoulder.
Being honest, I am not always so good at getting him back up there. There is always more, it seems, that I can do.

Interesting question Rena! How do you guard your heart from Evil..? Hmm..This is interesting since, lately I have been thinking about this. Seems you guard your heart from doing evil since you realize that you don't want that evil done against you. Or else, you can say I don't care, and then do it. But I think our inner self itself helps us to do the evil or keeps us from doing the evil.
And like one person said, Prayer! Pray that you will do the right things today and be guided to do the right things!

I do not think that the Heart has to guarded from evil, it is the mind that needs to be guarded from evil, because the Heart does not have thoughts as do the mind.

Some evil hearts, even a child can recognize and instinctively avoids. Some are cleverly masked. The masked evil hearts use the same makeup. They are cookie cutter cut outs of eachother. As you become older, you more easily recognize the unmistakable signs of the masked evil hearts and avoid them like the plague.

You must learn to use your antennae! They will not fail you. Your inner voice, or instinct, is also another good tool.
Sharpen these up. They'll protect you and ward off danger and hurt.
In addition, as you age, life's experiences will add up and hopefully! you'll have learned a thing or two along the way.
Evil is crafty and can be quite seductive. But, you can side-step it with practice and honing of the above mentioned.

I do through prayer. Some say the heart wants what it wants, but I always pray to be protected from the evil I can't see, the forces working against me, and the strength and fortitude to do His will rather than my own.... That way, the only time I'm inflicted with any pain from evil around me, its because God listened and opened my eyes, and I continued to feed the beast anyway.

I guard my heart from evil by staying connected to my Higher Power, and by study of God's word, by meditation, and prayer.

1) Personal choices - actions that are loving, truthful, right, helpful and in consideration of others.
2) Prayer - help from a higher power to protect you from malicious or evil intent.
3) Not giving in to short term gain at the expense of others or other temptations you know would be wrong.
4) Keeping positive and good thoughts in your head, not thinking entertaining ideas or thoughts that are not good or somehow "evil".
