The declaration was late, there is absolutely no doubt about it.

The target of 370 to a weak batting team on a day 5 Indian wicket which looks scary with those cracks, and has uneven bounce was impossible to chase.

I know the wicket again misbehaved. It looked really bad but it behaved well for 3 and a half days. But in last 1 and a half day the wicket started behaving badly and a lot of balls kept low.

India did two wrong things today -

1) We played slowly on day 5 ( batting) - If there was any intention of winning this match, then we should have scored at a better rate. That didn't happen, only Karthik and Ganguly tried to score quickly. Obviously our super negative team was happy with a draw and they were really really not pushing for a win. India's slow batting on day 5 just proved it.

2) Late declaration - Since they were not playing to win this match so the declaration was never in the mind of our captain. They should have declared after getting a 300 run lead.

Who said it wasn't a sacry looking wicket ?

Oh come on, the wicket was full of huge cracks. Brucy Yardly infact inserted half of his finger into those cracks. Before answering, get some knowledge about the game.

I totally agree with you. Since India was leading the series 1-0, the main focus of the team was not to loose the match, so that India can win the series. I too feel that india should have declared atleast at lunch on day 5. However, since india have never won a series in India against Pakistan for the past 27 years and as Kumble was leading India for the first time as Captain, he did not want to take any type of pressure or risk and played it safe, so that India can win the series. While in the interest of the game and as a sportsman spirit, Kumble was at fault for the late declaration, he will have his own justification and as the decision was of the team management, he cannot be totally blamed. May the the fact that Ganguly and Karthik were batting freely, Kumble had an apprehension as to whether Pakistan will try for a win if he declares earlier as Pakistan had nothing to loose , but everything to gain.

Because Kumble didn't want to take a risk with the weak bowling attack.
Agreed the pitch was being gay like you, however look at India's bowling attack. We had 2 main pace bowlers, one of who is in his 2nd test. Ganguly is a part timer so he doesn't count.
the pitch had nothing in it for spin so Harbhajan and Kumble are both rendered useless.

Can you being a captain and about to win a series in your homeground after 28 years, be willing to score less just so that you can humiliate the Pak team furtehr by snatching a last minute victory ?

Ind were lucky to ger the 7 wickets. PArtly coz Kumble picked up 5 wickets bowling medium pace. How would he know beforehand whether he can really pick up 5 wickets n almost take his team to edge of victory? on top of that, 11 overs were left before light was called....if we had played the 11 overs, I am sure Kumble and co. would have taken out the tail enders ....

Its easy to criticize and express your opinions in hidsight after seeing the result of the game. but what if Pak top order struck and made 6 runs an over and played the game as if they r playing 20-20. Pak would ahve nothing to lose since they already lost the series. there will always be the WHAT IF factor and when it's such a crucial series (for India and also for Kumble as its was his first one as captain), why take unnecessary risk when you have alerady sealed the deal?

The delay on his part may be condoned seen against the delay by the selectors to choose him captain.
Did he not declare in the second test with a fair chance to Pakistan too. After hind sight you may think we could have won if declared half an hour earlier.Even then it would have been only a draw because the Pakistanis would have been careful to that extent.
They lost quick wickets only after realising they can play relaxed cricket.Kumble too could not have had the option of such attacking field with a lesser target.
Being his first series it is understandable.

With an excellent coach via the Aussies interior the 4th attempt, there is standard conception that they are back in saddles and can win the 5th attempt besides. besides the undeniable fact that, I see 2 matters here...... initially, the oz..team isn't as consistent because it was 2 years back and secondly, the Oval pitch and prerequisites won't coach to be as tailormade for Australia because it did at Edgbaston. My prediction is that the team batting first might lose the tournament. in spite of everything, the sequence has come alive and except the English batsmen as quickly as back throw it away, i think of there is a superb sport handy.

It wasn't a scary looking wicket as you understood. It was a wicket with no pace, spin and bounce.Only scary thing was the low bounce. That's why Anil Kumble resorted to medium pace bowling during the 2nd innings to take advantage of the low bounce.Yes do agree, we did declare slightly late, probably declaration after lunch would have been ideal.

Maybe anil kumble thought of giving DineshKarthik a chance to get into some sort of form by allowing him to score a 50.

Is this a Question?? If its why set 370 as a target because India has no faith in its bowlers. And that they are happier with a draw than a chance to lose the match.

Australia on occasions have set very competitive totals and a few times it has backfired with a loss, but mostly come off with a win. Its the chance you take. Its what seperates the attacking teams from the defensive ones... CONFIDENCE in yourself and your team-mates ability.

it was not an interesting match, because Kumble didnt set a competitive target. It is possible that if he took risk India may have even won.
