Just a few days ago one youth shot-up a Christian Mission and then went on to shoot-up a Church . He left messages in notes and emails that he 'wanted to kill as many Christians' as he could . Not all violence is directed at Christians though . Many times it's directed in general at anyone in society . But there's also no denying that many many youths have targeted and shot classmates, teachers, family, parents, and acquaintances. And this is not something that occurred regularly before the 1980's or 1990's . The increase is astounding . The guns were far more easily attained BEFORE all of this too , so it can't be guns .
So what is it ? Selfishness? Greed? Molly-coddling our youth? Hate? ......... or maybe the obvious, the continued removal of God from many aspects of our society ?

We are declining as a nation. Not only in our religious stance (or lack thereof) but in our respect for our fellow Americans altogether.
There are several trends we see today that would never been acceptable 30 - 50 years ago. Namely, disrespect for the president. I'm a little sorry that I voted for the guy at this point but I would never say some of the things I see people say on TV talk shows, online, even on the "news". Going beyond that, I see more and more people make light of or even joke about some of the situations. Take Michael Jackson for instance...how many of us made jokes about him and his trial? Then you have Amazon promoting a book that basically gives pedeifiles a pat on the back. The publisher, the CEO of Amazon should all be put behind bars for contribution. And theny ou take a trip to Hollywood or a video game company and its all about the next movie or game that glorifies criminals...my State gets outcries when they try to inject a rapist murderer? Because its inhumane??? As opposed to?
Just a few of the issues I see...
I'm not a highly religious person, have plenty of my own questions with most religions, but I have not made war on religion and on people who basically want to treat one another with respect. Unfortunately, it seems that more and more of the country doesn't share that philosophy.

I recall lots of violence occurring decades and centuries before all of these shootings. It's the new fade for extremist people just as suicide bombers are the new fade for terrorist organizations and guerrilla type warfare.

Religion is responsible for many of people's warped views on reality. Maybe the shooter himself was a Christian and couldn't take the blatant hypocrisy any longer. Or maybe he was raped by a Priest as a child and finally snapped.

The youths targeted the people that they felt responsible either directly or indirectly for their problems. What does that have to do with their selection in victims, these people are emotional disturbed, of course they target those they feel are responsible.

And btw, I can find a gun easily... it's really not that difficult. There are lots of guns floating around out there, of course they aren't just registering for gun permits, waiting five days then coming back to murder everyone.

Perhaps the issue is more complex than invoking the name of God and diluting the problem down with more Christian pseudo-intellectual knowledge.

It all derives from the "anything goes" mindset and the stigmatization of anyone passing judgment on any behavior.

This could be a product of the removal of religion from society, but good atheists and agnostics have a moral compass...

Selfishness is a good theory - look at the kid in Omaha who wanted to go "out in a blaze of glory". Then there are the interviews of the gunman's friends, who said they didn't think any less of him even though he just slaughtered innocent people...

An amazing decline in traditional morality as depicted in pop culture: music, movies, and television broadcasts. In addition to this, the level of intolerance to others with an increase in the lack of civility in thought and manners which has occured in the last generation, is eroding America and weakening her people.

By the way, in Japan, which has far less violent crime when compared to America, violence of any kind is not tolerated on television, and, most American drama are/would be banned. Interestingly, many shows are broad casted that would be considered an "X" movie or porn in America with little ill effects and no public outcry.

Violence dismisses man's humanity to others. I cannot watch TV except for a few shows as I find it so revolting and counter to my way of life.

Well, I remember being admonished by a European who was taking pictures of young, topless girls at an Italian beach...He told me that the age of consent where he was from was 15, so please take my American prudishness back across the ocean....

Seriously, we live in a highly sexualized society...kids want to be sexy before they even understand what that means and there are plenty of sickos out there who are more than happy to take advantage of that...

Have you seen the posters at the Mall where the kids shop. Forget MTV and trash TV...Have you watched Disney or the Family Channel lately?

If one of my sisters went out dressed like that when they were 10 my dad would have gone all Muslim Honor Killing on them...

Alienation caused by fear and greed. Many people no longer feel a part of a community. The "us vs. them" mentality is encouraged as a virtue. Parents that are too busy working and too tired afterwards have a harder time paying attention to their kids' emotional well-being.

I know many students who don't go to church or don't believe in a Christian God but are very peaceful and well adjusted kids. They aren't selfish, even though I do believe selfishness and narcissism are huge problems in this country. But what do you expect, they are perpetuated by the media and celebrities like Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, and the media who feed us their lives as if it is news. I'm with alphabet... on this issue. I don't watch much television either because it is so filled with violence, narcissism and selfishness. Did you know that the kid that shot up the church and missionary in Colorado went to that church and missionary himself? He came from a very religious family and was home schooled.

Tell me where God could have stopped any of this. We have a president who kills people in iraq based on a lie and he claims he talks to God everyday and that God talks to him back. He's setting an example to our youth and you think it's because God is removed from many aspects of our society? I'd say it is religion itself that is causing so much suffering in our society. The Catholic priest pedophiles are just such an example. Now we have protestant sunday school teachers being accused of the same. Perhaps the Christians and Catholics, especially those on the right, need to go back and read the words of Christ. Because they've pretty much warped and twisted anything the Bible or anything that Christ has ever said to acheive their own hatefilled and warped agenda for power in this country.

BTW, I don't respect any president who disrespects his own country, Constitution and rule of law. I don't respect any president or leader who lies about a country and immoraly conducts a rogue foreign policy of killing hundreds of thousands of people for his own agenda, not the country's agenda. I don't have any respect for any leader who is as immoral as GWB who advocates the use of torture (which is already illegal) and then tries to have it covered up by having the tapes destroyed. That is extremely immoral. He has disrespected this country and he doesn't deserve any moral citizen's respect.

A variety of things contribute, some may weigh more heavily in some cases than others:

Overexposure of like events by the media
Less supervision of youth due to more working parents
Incorrect medication for mental disorders
Cry for attention
