He was the man who became the Buddha, or the Enlightened one.
When known by this name, he was a young prince in ancient India who was shielded by the harsh and cruel realities of the world. His parents kept him ignorant from poverty, sickness, aging, and death while they lavished him in the lap of luxury within the palace walls.
Siddhartha's curiosity became to strong and eventually he ventured out beyond the castle walls to see what lie beyond. He saw the four sites:
An old man; a sick man, a dead man; and a holy man.
This concept of impermanence and suffering is what caused Siddhartha to leave behind his life of luxury and take the spiritual path which became known to us as Enlightenment, or Nirvana, thus earning the title of the Buddha.

Siddhartha Gautama was an actual Hindu prince who became the original Buddha. He lived in India some 500 years before Jesus was born. Isolated from the world by his wealthy father, the young prince saw suffering and poverty when he was on a journey away from the palace. Deciding that he needed to experience what the impoverished and the suffering were enduring, he left his home and his family and became a wandering beggar. He then decided that there must be a middle road between suffering and comfort; so he embarked upon the practice of meditation by resting under a Bodhi tree and entering into long periods of meditation. It was while in meditation that he became truly enlightened and he began to teach his philosophy to all who would listen.
