One of my favorite things about small town Wyoming is on a cold winter day you can see a dozen cars outside the post office unlocked, empty, and engines running and NO ONE bothers them.

Can you do that?

I remember hearing about an even smaller community a couple of years back. When an escaped prisoner was believed to be in the area, the residents decided they really should take the keys out of their cars.

I used to be able to. I lived on an island in the Pacific Northwest. Now I'm smack dab in the middle of hell.

You can do that, but remember there is always a chance that something could happen, no matter where you are.
If your keys are in the car and someone takes it (whether it's running or not), it's considered your fault.
If you're going to be inside somewhere for such a short time that you would consider leaving the engine running, I think that it wouldn't take that long to heat back up and possibly save you a lot of trouble.
I hate to use this phrase because my mom always used it on me, but ... "Better Safe Than Sorry"!
I also hate to admit that she was right about that!

No way, cars around here get stolen even if they are locked.
With my last car, (which is kept in a parking area at the back)
I had it for 6 months, when some one fired air rifle pellets in to the back.
Then some one smashed the back window, finally when it was 3 years old it was set on fire.
So buy a new one, it was parked in store car park, while I was shopping, return to find some one had driven in to the back.
Final again it was parked and some kind sole had scratched the side and punctured one of the Tyre's.
Next year plan on moving.

Mine was stolen a few years ago when I did that in Indianapolis, IN. Of course I grew up in a little town where everyone did that. Now i know better.

Probably not in town.
Where we are, yes. There's little around us but fields and orchards, the woods in our back.
Well, most likely, yes. I say that because there was this teen that took the neighbor's tractor for a joyride once. I reckon he might try something, if anyone.

I only leave my car running and unattended in my driveway. Anywhere else, no way! Too risky in this big city.

Sure if you live in one of those safe places if not leave it running locked and take an extra key with you.

Living in Nevada, yes, we can do that all the time. But when I lived in NY, you couldn't leave your car UNATTENDED PERIOD. There it would be stolen, running or not!

Sure you CAN. But I sure wouldn't risk it. It only takes one time for some hoodlum to be passing through and seize the opportunity.
