My podiatrist says that I have to have ankle surgery. He did an ankle stabilization with my ligaments 6 years ago, and now he said I have a tendon that is too long and he wants to drill a hole in my ankle bone and cut my tendon in half and loop it through the bone. I am having discomfort in my ankle when I am walking only, especially up hills, but what kind of surgery is this? I feel like I walked in there with a minor irritation and now he is talking about drilling a hole through my bone. And this just feels stupid! I have no idea what the MRI showed; he didn't even let me see it. Is this normal? What is this surgery called?

He is an orthopedic surgeon; he will be doing the surgery.

If you are unhappy with his decision then get a second opinion. It may feel like a minor problem just now, but he is most likely trying to prevent it getting worse and possibly needing something a lot worse!

If it doesn't make sense at first, go seek a second opinion. If you were to see me, I wouldn't be so quick to re-do surgery and would try to see if I can get you comfortable with orthotics and other non-invasive means. If you need to see another opinion, go to www.footphysicians.com to see a qualified foot and ankle surgeon in your area for another evaluation. Sounds like he's re-doing the reconstruction of the ankle ligaments by using half of your tendon. It's a big procedure so like I said before, get a second opinion. Hope this helps!

Consult another doctor preferably an orthopedic surgeon. The diagnosis and the treatment suggested sound weird.
