They have this weatherproofing tape that you put in the door frame to provide a more secure seal for your door. They also have stuff you can put on the bottom of your door.

Try a draft guard for the door. They make ones that move with the door when you open and close it. As for the little guy, does he complain that he's cold? If not, he's probably fine but if you're still worried get some of those socks made for camping that have aluminum threads in them. He would wear them under his regular socks. Or just extra thick ones with grippers on the bottom. Microfleece is a good warm material for clothing. Or just try a few layers. A long sleeve shirt with a sweatshirt over it would probably be enough for him, especially if he's really active. We have an issue with our three level townhouse heating unevenly. The playroom is on the bottom floor and it is always freezing down there. Great in the summer, not so great in the winter. I would never want to stay down there longer than needed but my almost 2 year old and 4 year old love it. Kids have faster heart rates and more energy so they don't notice the cold as often as we do. If he doesn't complain, you really probably shouldn't worry too much! You sound like a great stepmom!

Yes, if air is coming in around the door, it shouldn't be. It means the weather stripping is worn out or maybe even missing. Any hardware store will have a variety of styles to choose from. You can get it in plastic, metal, foam, and rubber. the sticky foam stuff works well and is easy to put up (may need to be re-done every couple of years though). If you know someone to ask for help, then that would be great otherwise the better hardware stores should be able to instruct you as well. It's pretty easy. I you have more questions, feel free to email me too.
