Phoenix grew so rapidly, they couldn't keep up. Plus we are extremely spread out. Unlike a place like New York or Chicago where they build up, not out. We will always be dominated by the car. But i will tell you, in comparisson to most of the East Coast, the freeway system here (now that we have the 101/202/51/60) is much better. Here you get on the freeway to go just about anywhere. Back east, it's all about the surface streets and people avoid the freeway.

The public transportation can not keep up with the area's rapid growth. Urban planners years ago should have developed a better public transit plan that included other options than the city bus like commuter trains or a subway system. But since planners waited so long to develop a varied public transportation system, residents of Phoenix can not imagine anything other than driving. Most of the money for public transportation, therefore, goes to expanding freeways and widening roads.

It's decent "Valley Metro" they have gotten a lot better over the years with new more frequent and later running lines. They are also buliding a light rail line which should be up and running in about a year. For now commuting isn't bad especially with the recently expanded network of Rapid and freeway express routes. Good Luck!

Too big a city, and it grew too fast to develop the public transportation that, say, New York or Chicago developed. I think they're trying - the light rail will help - but Phoenix will probably always be largely a car dominated city.

It's so bad especially for the disabled. Busses don't run on Sundays and they are never on schedule. Plus there's no public transportation for the west side. They are working on a light rail system but that's only going to help a few cities. I hope they really start making improvements but it's doubtful.

Soon there will be a tram to connect Phx with the valley cities. I live in Tempe and there is a new inter-city bus system that can get you connected to other bus lines. I don't mind driving but when I cannot burn my fireplace because of the smog...not happy so I take a public trans.

It sucks! They increased the prices for these stupid machines that half the time don't spit out cards for transfers. It's over packed in the morning and usually late...and there are so many creepy people on the bus lol. It's true I tell you! Update oh your talking about the rail? I havent really heard anything about it lately but It's going to be awsome when they finally get it up and running!

I couldn't tell you about phoenix public transportation, but if its anything like that of Tucson, it's crap. Why? Simply because the State and the City don't consider it a high priority.

Phoenix Transit system is better than most alot of cities, however due to the rapid growth of Phoenix and proper funding it's hard for them to keep up.
