It is an age old mystery still, I can't decide on best answer so against my usual habit of choosing one, for once one goes to the vote.

it relaxes the facial muscles, opens eyes, steadies the eyes and makes you less likely to blink.

It comes from not being able to do 2 things at the same time like patting your head while you rub your tummy. When we are applying mascara we are concentrating on the lashes and forget to keep the old mouth closed ..... *smile*

For some reason it makes me feel like I can keep my eyes open wider... It's one of those age old questions... I fight it though, it's just a habit. My fiancee likes to point out when I do it...

Because it helps you keep your eyes open wider so you can properly apply mascara without getting it all over.

I saw this questions before and than went home and took notice.
I don't open my mouth when I put on mascara but I do raise my eyebrow.
don't know why.

i have no idea lol. i always do that everytime i put mascara on. when i notice i'm doing it i stop though. thats really funny. i guess it kinda helps you concentrate on not blinking and keeping ur eye open really wide.

LMAO!! Nice observation... Im sure there is a reason...I have no clue. I think it keeps your eyes still because when you open your mouth it lifts your forhead and eyes.. if you dont believe me then try it!

The same reason why some people bite there tongue when they are trying to work something out, its the brains way to help concentrate.

IT keeps you from blinking and it streches the bottom part of your eye. I personally dont do it because i think it looks hallarious but it helps
