My car might be a goner. It's 97 Grand Prix with a 155,000 miles on it.

When i was driving down the road, I noticed the car at times made a high pitch screeching noise. I pulled it into my garage and noticed a burning smell. Now the car won't move at all and makes and still makes a high pitch screeching noise.

The screeching noise occurs when the gear is in park now.

Thanks for all the responses.

Also, right before the screeching noise occurred, it sounded as if the car ran over something. Some type of noise came from the bottoms of the car

burning smell could be the belt slipping, it is a single serpentine belt that drives all the pully's.
could also be brake caliper(s) that didn't release back and are rubbing against the rotor, thus heating up and smoking.
My bet is the belt slipping. OR a pully/accessory is seizing up, causing the belt to slip and squeal and smoke up.

More details are needed on the screeching. Does it do it in all the gears, when the car is stopped, or moving and where does the noise seem like it is coming from. Check to see that there is sufficient oil in the engine as well as in the transmission case.

Check your serpentine belt, it may have broken and that could have been the burning you smelled. When you are checking the belt out also check all your pulleys. There has to be a reason for the belt to break. With me when I had this problem, it was my A/C compressor. It had siezed up and caused my belt to fry from all the rubbing on it. So make sure everything spins freely and if not, there should be a diagram on your fan shroud that shows the routing of your belt. Use this diagram to determine the siezed part, if any. Good luck.

Might be a loose serpentine belt caused by a bad belt tensioner pulley. If the belt slips, you'll smell rubber burning and all the accessory pulleys won't turn and you'll loose power to everything that's on the serpentine belt. Check any other belts as well. Your A/C compressor clutch bearing may be freezing up too and will eventually tear the belt apart.

A pulley froze up or has something stuck in it. Have a friend or someone start it real quick to have a look.
If you have tools, just try and turn the engine over manually by the crank and see whats not moving.

Check your C.V. joints. Sounds to me like one just broke into pieces and since this car doesn't have a limited slip differential, it foolishly tries to make the broken joint do all the work. Jack up the car and look at your drive axles. Chances are that one of them needs to be replaced. Good Luck!!!

sounds like lack of maintence, but you might be in luc k it could just be tranny probs. but i'm guessing here from not knowing the vehicle it sounds as if you have internal engine damage. and with 155 on the car just call it a loss and move on somtimes its better to just get away

sounds like maybe the torque converter went out in the transmission, so thats will be quite a bit to fix, but it may be something not as bad, like a pilot bearing, hard to really say from my view, or lack there of. .

Could be the brake calipers are stuck on the rotors and not releasing. Put it up on jackstands and see if the wheels move freely.
