a co-worker of mine has a son who is 18 yrs old and had a dr's appt at a time that he was in class. when he went to sign out he was told he had to have a parent sign him out. i have been in law enforcement for 5 yrs and have a bachelors degree in pre law and the law here in texas as i understand it regarding the legal adult age is 18 unless they are mentally incapacitated to make sound judgements. i couldn't find anything that clearly stated this so i could print it out and give to her for future reference.

The legal adult age is 18

However.... a school is free to establish it's own rules and policies. If they want to say that even adult students have to be signed out by a parent, they can do so.

When still in high school he is sorta under a different law. His parents are suppose to sign some paper work that he is mature and old enough to sign himself out. His parents could go in and fight it or excuse it.

That's how it was explained to me in high school and when my younger step siblings turned 18 it was the same for them.

The parent sign out was a school policy not a legal one.
