After the First Crusade, several Christian kingdoms were established and remained in the Middle East for some time. Despite the Second Crusade botching up the political situation that had kept them stable, they continued to endure for a while. Generally, they were best off if people from Europe kept their hands off.

The Third Crusade was largely a reaction to the mess made by some of the resident Crusaders, more or less as depicted in the film. But the film is focused on the kingdoms in a time between crusades, as such.
