I overheard someone talking, saying that if he heard that a guy listened and enjoyed listening to a certain singer he would automatically assume the other guy was gay. And on the other hand if this same someone heard that the other guy listened to a different certain band he would assume the other guy was straight. This just struck me as a bit weird that he would prejudge peoples sexual preference just on their taste in music. This made me curious as to what others thought on the subject, so...

•In your opinion, does listening to or enjoying certain singers/bands affect whether you are gay, bi, or straight?
•Would you automatically assume someone was gay, bi, or straight by their taste in music?
•Or are you of the opinion that music doesn't have anything to do with ones sexual preference (such as myself)?

My life IS music,so I'm not really sure how accurate my answer may be but, here goes anyway. - Music affects your emotion, even if you're not listening to it - Say your out somewhere and you're waiting for someone, say down the local fast food resturant, music will be playing, and even if your not intentionally listening to it, it can change your mood. - It helps choose your friends - You'll meet people with the same musical intrests. It's most likley that your friends will have the same taste in music as you. You meet people at gigs, etc. - The way you dress - Not wanting to stereotype now but, it's true. Take these 'emos' for example. They listen to rock, heavy stuff, and they dress a certain way; skinny jeans, band tees, razored hair, thick eyeliner, converse. Wheras if you see a teenaged girl walking down the street in short shorts, high heels, a big handbag, flashy top, fake tan and straight hair, its most likley they'll like the "common" stuff - JLS, Justin Bieber, N-Dubz, Chris Brown, Ne-Yo, Pussycat Dolls, Usher, Miley Cyrus, Alexandra Burke... - What you do - I attend concerts ALOT. Of course, I guess thats inside the musical world but, if I wasn't so passionate about what I listen to, or maybe if I didnt know so many bands, then I wouldnt attend many. Also, people skip school to go to band practice, etc. People want to be like they're favourite music idols. - Confidence - Singing, playing in a band, or solo instrument. You play in front of people. It builds confidence, so when you've put your instruments away and are out on the streets, you're more confident than you mightve been before. Just my opinions (: x

Personally, it doesn't affect my preference. I listen to some female singers, but usually the males in that audience are gay, but I am straight. One would even think that I listen or buy the albums just because the artist is rather attractive. I don't like how people think that listening to a certain makes you girly or manly or whatever. I am open to different genres. I sometimes look at certain forms as guilty pleasures or just another form of music I like to listen to. I listen to old R&B like Boyz II Men, Jodeci, etc. Though the audience is mainly females, I still like them. I don't think that it affects my preference. Just don't listen to what other people think. Everyone tells me that, and they are right.

I don't think that you can tell someone's sexual orientation just by the music that they listen too. I listen to all types of music. No, I wouldn't automatically assume someone's sexual preference just by the music they were listening too. Everyone is entitled to listen to what ever music they want. So I am with you on this one.

Music does not determine your sexual preference. Most of the research suggests that it is determined by genetics and/or pre-natal hormone levels.
