I am involved with an organization that instead of giving gifts to each other for x-mas wants us to bring personal items for elderly women in nursing homes. I have no idea what these items should be? any suggestions?

I am a nursing home nurse, and I think what the ladies really enjoy are large print magazine subscriptions, warm socks, family collage photos, slip on clothing (buttons and snaps can be difficult for the elderly), nice smelling shampoos and bath soaps ( the nursing homes only supply the cheap soap smelling stuff) and most importantly is routine visits or phone calls. You wouldnt believe the depression rates in nursing homes. Those little old people get so lonely. I would not give anything of too much value such as expensive perfumes or jewlery as unfortunately those things tend to come up missing. Non skid soled shoes are another great idea. Also, if you are planning to send any form of food item, you might check with the nurses to make sure she isnt on a therapeutic diet. You wouldnt want to give her anything that could make her sick. Hope this helps.

Since people in nursing homes have to have headphones to listen to their televisions, (If they're in a shared room) I'd suggest a pair of wireless headphones along with the basic stuff. Lotion and Puffs/Kleenex is always a good idea, if you know what brand or scent they prefer. If they aren't very active, as in mostly bed bound, a warm and plush blanket will help keep the chill off of them. I know my Dear Mom appreciates all of these things.

My sorority does that at a nursing home here.We adopted 3 ladies and get personal items they need.Lotions, lip balm or lipstick, socks, lap robes, walker or wheel chair bags are great.May I suggest you speak to the social service worker in the home for a list of residents that will not have visitors this year?Chocolate is a real treat for many, make sure they can have it....Good luck with it.......

Perfumed dusting powder and lotions. Almost every older woman that I have bought for in the past has loved when I give them this. They get really dry skin in the nursing home and to give them the lotion in a pretty scent would be thoughtful. You can get these for a reasonable price at stores like Walmart.

Depending on how much you have to spend I know these ladies aren't furnished with nice soaps, lotions, bath powders, good shower cap,Kleenex, if they are not furnished then pull-ups (depends or any brand), gripper socks, Vaseline lip therapy, manicure sets that contain clippers, Poise pads.

You could put these in a nice basket and wrap in festive paper. They would love and appreciate such a gift.

A pretty bright plastic wall clock. A inexpensive watch, take a picture of it for the nurse to find if it gets lost. A body pillow to put against the wall if that is where the bed is placed. A new comforter with their name wrote on it with permanent ink. Bed room slippers in bright colors write name in it. Some nice hand lotion. A pretty box cover to put Kleenex in it. A sweater with name inside for laundry. Also I go to them and bring Christmas cards for them to sign and send to a love one and mail it for them. I also call someone they know and have not heard from and let them talk on my cell phone for a few minutes.

Some fragrant dusting powder, a lap throw, an afghan, or one of those really soft throws, so they'll be cozy during the cold winter months, especially. A soft stuffed animal or a soft & pretty little doll or some pretty stationary are great gifts also. Also, the warm colored footies they have out now are so soft & keep the feet warm.
