If you mean they are knocking on your door, you just don't answer it.
If you mean they are actually in your house/apt. and want them to leave, set up a fake emergency.
The first thing to do, right now, is actually make one up in case you need to use it. If you have kids that aren't home, that is an easy excuse. You can also use friends or parents as a cause of emergency, as well.
Put your cell phone in your pocket and pretend it rings (the guests will think it is set on vibrate). Talk dramatically on the phone and say that you will be right there.
Then, apologize profusely as you all scramble out the door.
Drive around for 5-10 minutes after the guests leave and come back (put your car in your garage if you have one).
Good luck!

That time I was living in Delhi... There was not a day when some guest was not there... And I had a hard time because for those who were elderly I had to go and receive them at the station and see them off too... It was a hard call on me because Rly. station was some 15 kms from my house.. It was very difficult for me to do all that but I did without complaining.... For one and half year there was not a day when some guest was not there..sometimes there were too many at the same time and we had no place to sleep ourselves...U r talking about getting rid of them... oh no never...in my culture guests are treated like God... that's why Indians r considered best hosts... to believe me u have to see for yourself... just come to my place how i welcome u... to treat guests too well is part of our life and we r happy in it.

My dad used to say he would put his jim jams on but he never did. He would stand up and say very politely ' sorry to have to bring the evening to a close so early but I have a very early appointment I know you will understand' he would then fetch the coats and the guests would be on their way before they had time to be offended.

Sneak out of the room and switch all the power off in the house. Pretend that you have no fuse wire left to fix it and suggest you continue the evening an other time - rather than keeping them in a cold dark house!

My best trick is say in the beginning of the conversation:
"I have an appointment later on (at whatever time)"
And after a while (a small one), if theyr still naggin around, just say, "Ok, its time for me to have a shower, im very sorry", or whatever like that.
There is nothing absolutely nothing they can do/say against that!

There may not be a polite way other than just lying to them and saying that you have to ask them to leave because you have to .......................................... and make up something plausible.
That should do it, but if it doesn't you might just have to get down and dirty and tell them to leave.
If they are undesirable characters, it doesn't matter if you hurt feelings as they aren't going to be a lost friend in the first place.

When they arrive mention that you have commitments for around the time you want them to leave, e.g study, work, phone call or anything really.
Say it in a low key way in the beginning then mention it closer to the time in casual conversation, then politely remind them at the time you want them to leave. White lie i suppose.

yawn and say "oh look what time it is?" or "i really enjoyed having you here" mind you some people just don't go away.. there was this friend of our family he stayed until 1-2am or till i told him to go away and leave us in peace lol.. so inconsiderate when people stay till late knowing you really dont want them to be there at this time of the day/night :P
anyway if nothing polite works just kick them out and be firm - remember it is your own house !!

I can't say we have any unwanted guest, all are welcome to a certain point but when it is time for them to go, my husband has no problem saying "It is time for you to leave now."
He has even said that to his mom!
