I too have always spelled it with one "d".

If you are speaking of a particular person and using it as his name, then capitalize it. ex: We are inviting Grandad for dinner.

If you are using it as a general term then do not capitalize.
ex: My grandad is coming over for dinner.

I agree with everyone who said one D. "Granddad" looks funny to me. Maybe its the non-American way to spell it.

When we say it, we don't pronounce the D twice, do we? (Of course, if this logic were completely sound, we wouldn't have an L in would, should, could, etc..., not to mention all the other crazy spelled words in the English language.)

Plus, the shorter version is the familiar type, so go with what feels good, but if I saw "Granddad" in a book, I would laugh at the author.

It's almost like creating a contraction. Grandfather = Gran'dad. ('sept you leave off the apostropohe)

I always spell it Grandad. I don't know why. I just do.

My spellcheck said granddad was spelled right, but it's your choice, any of them would work.

Don't go by spellcheck always. All the three words are shorter forms. So, one does not make a better word than the other. You can use any.

I've always spelled it with two ds and I think that's the grammatically correct way of spelling it.
