No, there is no inherent right to cyberstalk people. Report the IP address to the internet provider and with any luck they will be TOSed. If they are using a computer at work, maybe they just made a very bad career move.

You cannot track someones exact location using their IP address. Their IP can only be traced back to the ISP (internet service provider) that allocated it to them, and if the person has a dynamic IP address (most likely, most internet services use dynamic IP addressing) it will expire in a up to a week and a new IP is allocated to the person by their ISP, and if you want information about that person from their ISP you will need a police warrant. You'll need to find a more sensible (and less creepy) way to contact this person.

Blocking input from a particular IP address would be a matter to take up with your ISP. Is the person's IP address consistent? Many are dynamically assigned at the ISP, per login, and you might not want to block everyone from that domain.

Tracking down an IP address is inherently legal, in that it is necessarily public information. That's how the Internet operates. I look up IP addresses all the time.

There are several registrars; in the USA, start with:
http://www.arin.net/whois/

If ARIN does not control the registration for the particular IP address, the lookup gives you a link to the "whois" service for the part of the world where it is registered.

What website? Usually by reporting them the people maintaining the website do that for you. I know Livejournal lets you view and block IP addresses so I would guess its not illegal. Can you block the persons user name? Sometimes they would just make another though, and some websites make it so you don't need one.

No ! Many sites can assist you to track it down, in minutes.

However, call your Internet provider, explain you are being harassed, and they will change your IP by coming to your home. There is generally NO CHARGE.

So do it ! Then get a strong security set-up.

You should try calling your web hosting service (if you have one). They might have a service for you.

As far as I know its not illegal to track down an IP for any reason...just remember if you stalker is using DHCP they change frequently.

If you are running your own web server would give you thread but I don't know what you're using. Try reposting in Computers & Internet.

Interesting. First you asked if it was illegal...which it's not,by the way...and then without waiting for an answer, you asked how to do it. I don't know how to do it, by the way.

Leave it to authorities please. Document; print then take it to the local authorities. If they refuse or say they can't help, and you feel a crime is being committed, seek help at the cyber crimes unit at the FBI. www.cybercrime.gov

I don't know if it's criminal to do that. You should report the harrasment to your local police and ask them to follow up.
