...to get rid of slavery. If the whites of the north didn't fight the south how long would it have been till slavery had been abolished?

White ancestors didn't start slavery the British did, Irish and Scottish ( my roots) were right and they were slaves to the British, so come on I am just wondering your opinion based on the people and the resources of the time how long it would take.

Well, actually, almost 200,000 black soldiers were enlisted in the Union army during the Civil War. It can be argued that without them, the secessionists would have won.

So blacks helped liberate THEMSELVES - it wasn't just whites.

And 120,000 SOUTHERN whites were in the Union army, too. There were regiments in the Union army from every Southern state except South Carolina.

So SOUTHERN whites helped liberate blacks, too.

The Civil War, our Second Revolution against the slaveholders who attempted to keep a stranglehold on the USA, was a CLASS struggle. Capitalists, workers and peasants fought together against the phony "aristocrats" (many were illiterate!) who depended upon slavery for their power, and the poor whites they scammed into fighting for them.

A shame that few show that kind of spirit today.

Slavery was no longer economically viable more than thirty years before the Second Revolution. The slavers had all sorts of laws on their side giving them advantages over capitalists and manufacturers, basically forcing the other classes to subsidize them, otherwise they would have been out of business. They were able to pass these laws because of political advantages, advantages they were losing because of new western states adding anti-slaver senators to the Senate and the increasing Northern population adding anti-slaver representatives to the House.

They tried to maintain their advantage with their stranglehold over the Supreme Court and veto power over the presidency. When it looked like a non-slaver president would be elected, they knew their political power could no longer maintain their weak economic power.

They tried threats, saying if Lincoln was elected they would secede. But he was, and when they did, they lost the war they provoked.

So without the factors that led to that war, they might have continued to balance out their weak economics with strong politics. In that case, we might still be dealing with the slavers and their foul system TODAY.

Another war will come sometime in the future, a Third Revolution. Workers, farmers and small business will take on, and beat, the capitalists.

And then humanity will get, at long last, a chance for peace, racial equality, and long-term development.

Not long. Ten years maybe twenty. The price of slaves was rapidly rising to the point where an owner had to insure they got proper housing and medical care. A slave was becoming an investment too expensive to lose. It was approaching the point where it would be less expensive to simply pay poor wages and let them live on your plantation. Which is exactly what happened after the civil war ended.

It is ironic that the push for war came when it did. If the issue could have been stalled for the next ten years I am certain slavery would have ended due to economics and millions of lives would have been saved. I have never heard or read discussion on how it would have affected the slaves but possibly there would not have been as much resentment toward them had slavery ended voluntarily. Many southerners held hostility toward the slaves blaming them for the war and all its destruction rather than themselves. It hurts to blame yourself for your hardships.

The only reason the White's up North wanted to stop slavery was because of the Industrial Revolution, among other things. They no longer needed the "labor". I'm not saying its right, I'm just saying that is one of the main reasons. It may have taken longer, however, if they fight for it to stop.

i think it would have taken a lot longer or would not have happend b/c none of the slave revolts of the south were successful and there weren't many of them either. the slave owners instilled fear and fear is a powerful weapon.

I am proud to say Canada took in the slaves and gave them their freedom. I cannot imagine the pain people have to withstand.
