It is a global phenomena. Africa's poverty is due to their agricultural products being sold to US and Europe at a cheaper price. The same is here in India. The farmers do not get their rewards. The consumers do not get food products cheap. The cream is taken by the middle men, with the help of government. Farmers should get atleast 75% of the retail price of food grains.
Food is a fast moving item, the profit margin shall be restricted to minimum by law. Price control order is available for life saving medicines. Same should be applied to food.
Gulf countries are maintaining same price for food for the last 20 years. You can eat your stomachfull for Rs. 50 as lunch. We claim to be an agricultural country, but you can never imagine to have luch for that money at this price. At the same time our farmers commit suicide.

If you read the news items and about the family of dead it would come as a surprise that most of these people have more than 2 kids sometimes 4-5 even.
Why would a poor person have so many kids when there is barely enough income to sustain himself/herself beats me. And the only reason I can think of is that they lack ability to make practical decisions based on their income capacity.
Agriculture is a business and source of livelihood and it has to be managed and run accordingly.
The first things these farmers need to be taught is making rational decisions. Be it about family size, crop choice, irrigation, fertilizer etc.
I have been told by some friends that chemical fertilizers and pesticides have eroded the ability of soil to get healthy crop. Add to it the
farmers ignorance,
lack of rational decision making ability,
a trading community that tries to buy yield at lower prices,
a govt. system that doesent know what its promoting, and is extremely corrupt,
a money lender who is out to get maximum money out of minimum investment
And what you have is poverty , debt and ultimately death.
Surprisingly we have had govt. financed institutions to help farmers make "intelligent and rational" decisions about crop etc. Seems these have not worked either.
