I read it years ago before Hubbard was selling his weird cult. As pure S/F it was fairly good at that time but having moved on I now realise there are far better S/F writers and themes.
From my present vantage point what I thought was a fairly innocuous S/F book has now turned into the basis for a strange cult which immature minds may find attractive. As such it has gone beyond it's original inception and turned into dangerous reading for someone receptive to such nonsense.

An enjoyable "romp" through adventure. Too long, trying to be an epic without the epic scope to carry it off. Thoroughly unrealistic and unbelievable in some parts, even given the genre. Characters are the best part about it, though. It's worth reading, but it is not one of the best SF books of all time.
Movie sucked.

good old l ron, what an absolutely cracking book, pity the film was so bad.
ive read it 3 or 4 times, and it never fails to grip and entertain... unlike the film, and his ten volume Decalogue.
theres many a veiled reference to earth cultures...

Utter nonsense with totally unrealistic 'super-science', but the energy of the writing managed to carry the reader along. Enjoyable hokum, basically.

Not quite as awful as the film, but that leaves a lot of room for manoeuvre.
