To be precise Leprechaun means "stooping Lugh". Lugh is the leader of the gods in Irish myth. Unlike many places who adapted to Christianity the Irish monks made conversion stories from their old myths. The gods once giants lost their power to the new god became smaller and smaller and went to live in the hills as nature spirits. The leprechaun is the Great Lughs new form. Check out any book on Celtic myths to confirm this.

Well i think they would be alot more scary looking if they had leprosy. But I'd say you got the first part right.

A leprechaun is the term for the truncated bodily remains (hence the association with diminutive size) of an Irishman who looking through beer goggles thought he saw a beautiful woman in a prison. He leapt on the con and that was the end of it.
