Assuming those are exponents, when you multiply numbers with the same base, you *add* the exponents.

u^8 * u^4

= u^(8 + 4)
= u^12

Just so you understand the rule, try it for yourself with some small numbers:
2^2 * 2^3 --> 2^(2+3) --> 2^5 = 32
4 * 8 = 32

The rule does work, therefore the answer for your case is:
u^12

do you mean u^8 * u^4 ( the little pointy hat thing is called a carrot and can be found above the 8 on your keyboard, just to help you out)

u^8 * u^4 = u^(8+4) = u^12

the way you have it written can be confused for

8u * 4u = 32u^2
